Story-Telling
For my story, I chose to depart form the character that I created in class. I did this because I came up with an interesting reason for the character to go on an adventure throughout “the ship”. I wanted there to be a since of danger because I feel that something that would keep theme park guest interested in the task of this game would be something that required them to feel as though they are important. So I choose to make survival the main goal.
The game opens with the introduction to the character Smith Sutton. This character, although not an engineer on the ship is an expert tinkerer. So the character has background knowledge of how to fix things. This character is summoned by the captain for an important task. This is where the first chance for decision making comes into play. The player can choose to report immediately or try to get information from others in the park. This ultimately leads to the character reporting to the captain. Once the player reports they are informed that the Magellan is in engine failure.
This is when the player learns that the game they are playing is life or death Through trying to attain selfish goals the player learns that if the ship stays in engine failure much longer, the ship won’t be able to sustain human life! From here the captain Gives the player their tool. This tool is a map that if used correctly should help the player avoid other while traveling to the engine room!
As the player makes their way through the ship the misread the map and bump into some Robots. The bots know that this character is an expert tinkerer, and ask for help with some wiring issues. This leads to the third decision from the character: to help or not. If the character chooses to help the bots; they are able to continue without trouble. If they try to avoid the bots, the bots notice a difference in the character. This leads to the fourth choice: to go against the captain’s orders, or lie to the bots. From here the character is able to get back on track and make their way to the engine room.
Once the character finally makes their way to the engine room they immediately recognize the problem. This is when they faced with their fifth and final decision. Should the report to the engineers or take charge and solve the problem? Either way the character is able to tinker away and solve the problems of the ship.
In conclusion, anyone who travels through this immersive theme park attraction should be able to feel as though their actions important to the story as their ultimate goal is to save the Magellan. However, it is based on the character or guest how much interaction they want to have with the cast-members and how that effects the story. If the character chooses not focus on the time aspect of the game they should have some interesting character interactions. But if they choose to complete their task as quickly as possible they still have fun saving the ship!
